Learn gold trading: a working guide for Kenyan traders

Gold trading here means speculating on the XAU/USD price through a CFD, so you never own metal — you profit or lose on the price move. This hub walks you through what gold is, how a contract works, how margin and leverage behave, how to size a position to a fixed risk, what the trade actually costs, and how to place a stop. Each guide teaches one concrete thing, written for readers funding an account in Kenya with M-Pesa and trading with a broker licensed by the FCA, CySEC and FSCA rather than the CMA of Kenya.

FAQ

Common questions

Where should a complete beginner start with gold trading?

Start with the contract itself: XAU/USD, one standard lot equals 100 oz, and one pip is 0.01. Then learn position sizing and margin before you place any trade. Our learn section walks through pip value, margin and profit calculators so you can see the numbers on paper first, with no money at risk.

How much money do I need to start trading gold in Kenya?

There is no single figure, because it depends on your lot size, the leverage cap that applies to the entity serving Kenya, and how much of your balance you are willing to risk per trade. Work backwards from risk instead: decide the shilling amount you can lose on one trade, then let the position size calculator derive the lot size.

Is gold trading a good way to make money in Kenya?

Gold trading is high risk and many retail traders lose money, so it is not a reliable income plan. Treat it as a skill that takes time, with losses possible on any trade. Learn the mechanics, practise on a demo, and only risk money you can afford to lose. Nothing here is financial advice.

What is the difference between pips, points and lots on gold?

On XAU/USD one pip is 0.01 of a dollar, and platforms often quote prices to two decimals, so the smallest displayed increment matches one pip. One standard lot is 100 oz, a mini lot is 10 oz and a micro lot is 1 oz. Our pip value calculator converts any of these into dollars and shillings per pip.

Do I need to understand leverage before I trade gold?

Yes, because leverage is a cap, not a target. It lets you control a large gold position with a smaller margin deposit, which magnifies both gains and losses. At the applicable cap, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin. Use our margin calculator to see the deposit required before you commit.
